Types of Coverage for Recreational Vehicles

Liability Insurance

Covers costs if you’re responsible for causing injury to others or damaging their property in an accident. This includes:

  • Legal Fees: Coverage for legal expenses if you’re sued.
  • Property Damage: Pays for repairs to other people’s property.
  • Medical Expenses: Covers medical costs for injured parties.

Comprehensive Coverage

Covers non-collision-related damages such as:

  • Natural Disasters: Protection against damage from events like floods or hurricanes.
  • Theft: Covers stolen RVs.
  • Vandalism: Protects against intentional damage.
  • Animal Collisions: Coverage for impacts with animals.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage

Protects against property damage or medical expenses if the at-fault driver has insufficient or no insurance.

Collision Coverage

Reimburses for damage to your RV if you collide with another vehicle or stationary object.

Contents Coverage

Protects your personal belongings inside the RV, including furniture, electronics, and clothing.

Towing and Roadside Assistance

Provides support for towing and roadside emergencies, such as breakdowns or flat tires.

Emergency Expenses

Covers costs if your RV becomes unusable, including temporary lodging and transportation.

Total Loss Replacement

Reimburses the value of your RV at purchase, minus depreciation. For losses in the first five years of ownership, it typically covers the full replacement value without depreciation.

Campsite and Vacation Liability

Covers legal fees, property damage, or medical expenses if someone outside your family is injured in or near your RV when parked.

What Class of RV Do You Own?

RV owners often use “RV” to describe various types of motorhomes, categorized into three primary classes:

Class A: Luxury coaches, including converted buses, up to 75 feet long. They typically feature panoramic front windows, a living/dining area, bathroom, and might include “slide outs” for additional living space when parked.

Class B: The smallest coaches, such as camper vans and pop-up vans, without space over the cab. They often have a small kitchen with a refrigerator or grill, water heater, HVAC, portable toilet, and internal shower.

Class C: Towable but not drivable, including fifth-wheel vehicles and pop-up trailers.

If you own a Class A or B (often called a “motorhome”), you will definitely need specific RV insurance. Regardless of class, additional insurance beyond liability is necessary if you are still paying off your loan or do not own your RV outright, or if you are renting the RV.

Why Travel Trailer Insurance?

RV insurance goes beyond standard auto or homeowner’s policies, providing essential protection for the unique risks associated with recreational vehicles.

Since RVs serve as both vehicles and living spaces, they require a hybrid insurance policy that covers driving liabilities, personal belongings, and living expenses. Specialized RV insurance safeguards against accidents, theft, natural disasters, and other unforeseen incidents, making it indispensable for protecting your investment and ensuring safe travels.
